Cimex carpet cleaning machine in action in a Bristol office

Aura Floor Care started in Bristol in 2012 with one machine, a van, and a straightforward ambition: do the work properly and build a reputation on the back of it.

Fourteen years on, we hold NCCA Senior Membership, TrustMark approval, and WoolSafe Approved status. We've worked in cinemas, churches, hotels, office buildings, retail flagships, and sports grounds. Clients include Tesco, M&S, Amazon, Harvey Nichols, Bristol City FC, Bristol Hippodrome, and Bristol City Council. None of that came from advertising. It came from showing up, doing a good job, and getting called back.

This is how it happened.

Where It Started

Before Aura, the work was in the building trade. That background shaped how the business was set up. In construction, you either do things to a standard or you get found out. Corners that get cut on site tend to show up later, and when they do, they cost more to fix than doing it right the first time would have. The same logic applies to floor care.

Training came through UK industry courses before launching in 2012. The early years were Bristol domestic work mostly, wool carpets, hard floors, the occasional commercial job that came in through word of mouth. The focus was always on getting the result right rather than taking on volume we couldn't deliver on consistently.

Bristol is a good city to build a floor care business in. It has a large commercial property base, a strong hospitality sector, and enough high-end residential work to keep standards sharp. It also has a tight professional network. One good job in the right building leads to three more.

Building the Commercial Side

Commercial work started coming in steadily through the mid-2010s. Offices, managed buildings, retail units. Our operation of both domestic to commercial isn't just about scale. It's about reliability. A domestic client wants a good clean. A facilities manager wants a contractor who turns up on time, does the work to a consistent standard, produces the paperwork, and doesn't need managing. That's a different kind of trust to earn.

We invested in accreditation early because it matters for procurement. NCCA Senior Membership, TrustMark, PAS 86 British Standard. These aren't decorative. They're what gets you through the supplier approval process at organisations with structured procurement requirements. Without them, you're not in the conversation regardless of how good the work is.

The equipment investment followed the same logic. The Cimex R48 and R38 for encapsulation. The Ashbys Enforcer 400 for deep extraction. Klindex and specialist systems for hard floors. Professional equipment produces professional results. It also signals to clients that you're serious about the work, which matters on a first visit more than most contractors realise.

The Clients That Defined the Business

Some jobs change the trajectory of a business. Working with Tesco put us in a different category of contractor. The procurement standards, the site protocols, the consistency requirements across multiple visits. Meeting that standard and keeping the relationship built a reference point we could take into every subsequent commercial conversation.

Harvey Nichols brought a different challenge. High-end retail has zero tolerance for anything that looks less than perfect. The floor presentation in a store like that is part of the brand. Getting invited back regularly means the standard hasn't slipped.

Bristol City FC, Bristol City Council, Amazon, M&S, Holiday Inn, Best Western. Each one added something to how the business operates. Different environments, different specifications, different logistical demands. The team and the processes developed around that variety.

Going National

National commercial work came through reputation rather than a deliberate expansion strategy. A client we worked with in Bristol had sites elsewhere. A facilities management company we worked with locally had a national portfolio. The capacity was there to take it on, so we did.

On larger contracts we put six to eight operatives on site, covering tens of thousands of square metres across multi-floor or multi-site buildings. The same standards that apply on a small Bristol office job apply on a national contract. Same equipment, same methods, same documentation. The scale changes, the quality doesn't.

Bristol remains the base and the core of the business. The national work sits alongside it, taken on when the job is right and the client relationship makes sense. We're not chasing volume for its own sake.

What Hasn't Changed

The business is bigger than it was in 2012 but the fundamentals haven't shifted. No franchising, no subcontracting. Every job is carried out by our own trained team using our own equipment. The person who quotes the job is accountable for the result. That direct accountability is what keeps the standard consistent across fourteen years and hundreds of commercial clients.

We work across carpet, hard floor, stone, LVT, Bolon, parquet, terrazzo, and sealed wood. Domestic and commercial. Single visits and long-term contracts. The breadth of work keeps the knowledge current. You can't work in the environments we work in and stand still technically.
